Melwood was created in 1963 to serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Melwood serves more than 2,100 people with developmental disabilities in the greater Washington, DC area. Melwood's services include job training, employment, housing, recreation, and life skills. Melwood offers employment for more than 1,000 people with disabilities at more than 70 contract sites around the Washington region. Mail handling, office work, reception and store stocking are among the growing number of occupations in which Melwood workers are having great success. Melwood continues to seek new methods to provide more people with disabilities the crucial careful training they need to become proud and valuable members of the workforce in their communities.
