Kerry Wood works to improve the lives of children in and around Chicago by raising funds and awareness for its children's programs and other children's charities they support.
On June 30, 2011 Kerry and Sarah Wood launched the Wood Family Foundation. The Wood Family Foundation is a small but mighty organization that thrives with a grassroots approach to implementing new and creative programs to reach Chicago’s most at risk kids. WFF acts as an advocate for Chicago children, inspiring others to join them in their mission to improve the lives of children in and around Chicago by raising funds and awareness for its children's programs. In the last ten years Kerry has given of over $5 million personally and through the foundation in support of children’s wellbeing and education including a playroom for the children receiving oncology treatment at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and The Kerry and Sarah Wood Family Foundation Scholarship, giving a well deserving student with a full 4 year scholarship including expenses to the prestigious UIC Honors College.
Since its inception the foundation has provided new coats and toys for over 1,200 inner city elementary students. Kerry and the foundation, along with coaches and volunteers, teach the fundamentals of baseball while demonstrating the importance of teamwork and good sportsmanship through a week long baseball clinic which has touched the lives of over 900 kids within Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods. Wood Family Foundation’s next endeavor, Pitch In, is an afterschool mentoring program supporting 4th grade students through their academic career into high school. Pitch In translates the fundamentals of baseball and play into a solid foundation in which participants build on. Pitch In’s goal is to provide support and guidance to participants in a safe and fun atmosphere. The foundation hopes Pitch In will promote self-confidence and personal development in participants through program activities that blend academic learning with inter-active activities and experiences.
Kerry and The Wood Family Foundation strives to be an advocate for children in the Chicago community, willing others to follow in giving children the resources they need to succeed. If we all pitch in, they’ll get there.
